Watching, with increasing distress, the events in the Middle East, I am reminded of the Northern Ireland troubles. It is all too easy to forget, but those of us of a certain age remember, the seemingly endless carnage and sectarian bitterness there. Night after night, month after month, year after year, we saw reports of bombings and shootings on both sides. This was made worse by the infuriating bickering between politicians.
The Northern Ireland peace process is far from complete, but the worst of the murder has abated because people talked to each other and compromised.
Talking and compromise are the only things that will bring peace to Israel and Palestine. The sooner it starts, the better.
