The end of an era – the desk phone exits

Old TelephoneYesterday all the phones went from our desks at my workplace.

When I started working in 1981 there were phones on the desks, in-trays for all communications – yes – physical in-trays containing “internal memoranda”, telex machines, lots of suits and ties and no email. And a lot of people called each other “Mr” or “Mrs” or “Miss” within the company.

Now all that is gone.

Everything is on the laptop – Instant messaging, Email, PC Phone, PC conferencing. No ties. First names. All chilled out (of course!). Fantastic.

It feels very liberating.

Until your laptop blue screens and you have no mobile coverage. Then you are reduced to putting a string in between two baked-bean cans to communicate.
