Sad news of the death of Alan Whicker. He was a gentleman, debonair and charming. But there was a shrewd journalistic brain in his head. He asked incisive questions, charmingly. His programmes were compelling and entertaining. I particularly enjoyed his Australian series, Whicker’s World Down Under.
But the greatest tribute to Alan Whicker (apart from the hilarious Monty Python sketch) are the many TV roving reporter successors who owe something to him. Michael Palin, Simon Reeve, Michael Portillo, even Billy Connolly in roving mode. They all owe a debt to Alan Whicker.
